Hike in the quarries of Michelangelo
The Apuan Alps in the north of Tuscany are world-famous for their exceptional deposits of white marble. Throughout history, famous artists have quarried the marble here for their works of art. Even Michelangelo. Our hike takes us in his footsteps amidst this impressive marble world.
We start in the small town of Seravezza and hike uphill through chestnut woods to the small Romanesque parish church of San Martino, whose marble window rosette is attributed to the great sculptor. Here we take a picnic break and enjoy the view of Michelangelo’s marble quarries and the imposing mountains. The circular hike continues past lonely mountain villages and abandoned water mills and leads back to Seravezza via old mule tracks in the forest.
