Guided Tour of Pisa
The Piazza del Duomo in Pisa is one of the most beautiful squares I have ever seen! It’s no wonder that Gabriele D’Annunzio defined it as a “Lawn of Miracles”. Built in the Middle Ages when Pisa was an influential Maritime Republic, the square and its monuments mirror the spirit and the importance of the city in that period. It is right here that we will start our visit, in Piazza dei Miracoli. We will see the elegant Duomo in the Romanesque style of Pisa; a style that will become a model for the construction of many churches in Tuscany! The simple Baptistery dedicated to San Giovanni, the monumental Cemetery with its ancient Roman sarcophagi, and the symbol of the square and the city: the Leaning Tower! Our walk will take us to the square that was once the political centre of Pisa, Piazza dei Cavalieri with its Palazzo della Carovana from the Renaissance period. And to recall the glorious past of the ancient Maritime Republic, we will visit the splendid lungarni pisani (streets along the Arno River) with their buildings and tower houses.
