Guided Tour of San Gimignano
In the splendid countryside of Siena there are numerous medieval villages and one of these little jewels is San Gimignano; perched on the crest of a hill with its tall towers, it seems like a far-away enchanted place and when you walk along its narrow little streets, you feel as if you could be in a fairy tale from another era. It makes you wonder how a place so ancient has remained so beautiful throughout the centuries. Whatever the answer, we are extremely lucky that it has been so perfectly preserved so that we too can enjoy it today.
Walking below the ancient towers, we’ll voyage through the quarters of the city and its main squares: Piazza della Cisterna (cistern) and Piazza del Duomo; we’ll learn about the evolution of the towers and we’ll visit the stupendous Collegiate of Santa Maria Assunta. This, despite appearing very modest, houses beautiful medieval frescoes and renaissance art works that narrate biblical episodes and the tales of Saint Fina.
We’ll continue on towards the Rock of Montestaffoli which was constructed by the Florentines, here we’ll find ourselves at the highest point in San Gimigiano and we can enjoy amazing views of the surrounding countryside. Afterwards we’ll make our way back down and take the direction towards the Church of Saint Augustine; another wonderful little surprise.
